In a significant diplomatic boost, Russia has joined the growing chorus of nations supporting India’s long-standing bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This announcement comes on the heels of similar endorsements from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Bhutan, Portugal, and Chile.
During his address at the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated, “The discussion that has begun in the UN and other platforms for a fairer world order undoubtedly requires the expansion of representation for the Global South. We support candidacies from Brazil and India while advocating for positive decisions on the African Union’s well-known initiatives.”
India has been a vocal advocate for UNSC reform, arguing that its exclusion from the Council’s permanent membership does not reflect contemporary geopolitical realities. The country’s Permanent Representative at the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, has repeatedly questioned the continued dominance of the five permanent members, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive and equitable global governance structure.
