Apple May Join the AI Glasses Boom After 2026 Surge
AI eyewear is growing fast worldwide. Apple may enter that market next. Counterpoint Research says global AI-glasses shipments rose 263 percent year on year in the first half of 2026.
Timing could matter. Display-less models made up 96 percent of those shipments. Apple’s first glasses may follow that path. Audio, a camera, Siri, and iPhone links could lead. An augmented-reality screen may wait.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple is aiming for a late 2027 launch. A WWDC 2027 reveal is possible. Privacy is a reported priority. Camera glasses can record while worn. That raises questions about when people are filmed and how the footage is used.
The frames are expected to lean on the iPhone and other Apple devices. They may not put text or maps in front of the eyes. Instead, they could use sound, a camera, and Siri for assistance.
Display-less glasses already dominate sales. Counterpoint says those shipments rose 258 percent from the first half of 2025. They also rose 22 percent from the previous six months.
Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses show the formula. Users can shoot photos, play audio, take calls, and use AI. They do that without a lens display. The figures suggest buyers want everyday tools first, not a screen on the face.
The category should gain more features as big firms invest. Apple, Meta, Google, and Samsung are all working on AI eyewear. Later models may move past photos, playback, and simple questions. For now, the market is rewarding lighter glasses. Apple appears ready to start there.
